Give Montmagny one night, or a half-day stop on the A20 between Québec City and Rivière-du-Loup; come in early October for the snow geese.
Montmagny is a small Saint Lawrence river town on the south shore, about an hour east of Québec City. It is the capital of its own municipality in Chaudière-Appalaches and holds one of Quebec's 28 migratory bird sanctuaries. The draw is the river: snow geese in October, shorebirds in the sanctuary, and a ferry out to Isle-aux-Grues. The town itself is compact and walkable, with a handful of hotels and restaurants. Most travellers pass through on Autoroute 20; a night here breaks the drive and puts you on the water.

The centre is small enough to walk: quay, sanctuary, church and restaurants are within about 2 km. A car is needed for the golf course, the Zec de l'Oie-Blanche and the highway hotels. VIA Rail stops at 4 Rue de la Station, a short walk from downtown. Taxis are limited; book ahead for early departures.

Safety
- Autoroute 20 is fast and boring; the older Route 132 along the river is slower but is the actual reason to be here.
- The Isle-aux-Grues ferry runs on tide-dependent schedules: check the day's times before you plan around it.
- At low tide the sandstone flats stretch far out; do not walk out on them, the tide returns fast.
- Many restaurants and attractions close or cut hours outside Jun–Oct.
