Marttila is a municipality of about 2,000 people in Finland Proper, halfway along the historic Häme Härkätie between Turku and Hämeenlinna. The centre holds a wooden church from 1765, a small local museum and a 1.4 km river path; the surrounding villages add a dance pavilion, a horse farm and a marked hiking area. There are no hotels. Treat it as a half-day stop on a driving route, or a night in a cottage if you want the trails.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to see the area: sights are 3–15 km apart and buses are few, especially at weekends. The centre itself is small enough to walk, and the Kumpulanrannan jokipolku river path starts by the churchyard. Highway 10 passes 2.5 km north of the centre; the Härkätie runs through it.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real issues are rural ones: deer and moose on the roads at dusk, unlit lanes at night, and no shop or fuel after closing time in the villages.
  • No hotel in the municipality: book cottage or farm lodging ahead, and check the map that the address is really in Marttila.
  • Weekend buses on the regular services are few; express coaches stop at the Highway 10 junctions, not in the centre.
  • The river path can be muddy after rain; wear shoes you do not mind dirtying.
  • Campfires in the Marttilankorpi area are banned during wildfire warnings.
  • Wild camping is not recommended here: there are no large woods, only designated spots and lean-to shelters along the trails.
