Savannah is the county seat of Hardin County, a small town of about 7,000 on the Tennessee River in western Tennessee. Almost everything a visitor does here happens 9 miles south at Shiloh National Military Park, the 1862 battlefield that opened the Union push into the Mississippi Valley. The town itself is a base: a handful of motels, a river museum, and a main street that closes early. Plan one full day at Shiloh and a half day in town.

Getting around

You need a car. Shiloh is about 9 miles south of town on Highway 22 and the battlefield tour is a one-way driving loop of roughly 10 miles with numbered stops. There is no useful public transport between Savannah and the park.

Safety

Savannah is a quiet small town and the usual precautions apply: lock the car, do not leave valuables visible at trailheads, and watch for deer on the roads at dusk.
  • The battlefield tour is a driving loop: walking the whole thing is not realistic in summer heat.
  • Restaurants and shops in town close early, and Sunday options are thin.
  • Cell signal is patchy in parts of the park; download the map before you drive in.
  • Summer heat and humidity are the real risk here: carry water and start early.
