Chambéry is the historic capital of Savoie, a small Alpine city in a valley between the Bauges and Chartreuse ranges, 10 km south of Lac du Bourget. The old town is walkable in half a day; the reason to stay longer is the lake, the vineyards and the mountain trailheads on the doorstep. It works as a rail stop between Lyon and the ski valleys, or as a low-cost base for Aix-les-Bains and the Bauges.

Getting around

The centre is flat and compact: castle, cathedral, Place Saint-Léger and the elephants fountain are all within a 15-minute walk. Local buses cover the suburbs and the lake; the Vélostation in front of the station rents bikes (about €3 half day, €5 full day). Marked cycle routes run north to Lac du Bourget and south into the vineyards.

Safety

Chambéry is a calm, low-risk city; the real hazards are Alpine weather, mountain trails and summer heat, not crime. Normal city care applies after dark around the station.
  • Chambéry-Savoie airport (CMF) is seasonal: outside winter there may be no scheduled flights — check before booking.
  • The Fréjus rail tunnel route toward Turin and Milan has been disrupted by landslides and engineering work; check the current status before planning an Italy leg.
  • Saturday market crowds and the covered market area get tight; go before 10:00 if you want to move freely.
  • Summer valley heat: the old town traps warmth, and many small shops close for a long lunch and on Sunday.
