  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Pueblo sits on the Arkansas River where the plains meet the Front Range, 45 mi south of Colorado Springs and 120 mi south of Denver on I-25. It is a steel town with a compact, walkable Riverwalk downtown, a small cluster of museums and a food identity built on green chile. Most travellers pass through on I-25 or US-50; one night and one full day covers the centre, and a second day opens up Lake Pueblo State Park and the aircraft museum east of town.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread over 10 mi and buses run roughly hourly on weekdays only. Pueblo Transit is $1.00 one-way and $3.00 for a day pass (check), with no Sunday service. Downtown is walkable and the Riverwalk has paved paths; there are signed bike routes and some separated lanes.

Watch out

Safety

Pueblo is a normal mid-size US city: the Riverwalk and downtown are fine in daylight and busy evenings, but lock the car, keep bags out of sight and stay on lit streets after dark. Summer heat and winter ice are the likelier problems than crime.
  • Summer afternoons reach 33–35 °C and the air is dry: carry water.
  • Pueblo Transit stops around 17:00 and does not run on Sundays.
  • Winter nights drop below freezing and I-25 can close in snowstorms.
  • Distances between downtown, the airport museum and the reservoir are longer than they look on a map.
