  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Tyler is the Rose Capital of America, a small East Texas city of about 97,000 people on I-20 between Dallas and Shreveport. The rose garden and the museums cluster on West Front Street and downtown, but the zoo, Tyler State Park and Camp Ford sit several km out, so a car-based day or one night covers the city. Come in October for the Texas Rose Festival; rose bloom timing is check. Skip the July–August heat.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread over several km and buses run daily except Sundays and holidays. I-20 skirts the north edge, US-69 runs north–south through town, and Loop 323 circles the centre. Rideshare exists but waits can be long outside the centre.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

South Broadway

Chain hotels and Broadway Square mall; easiest parking and quick access to Loop 323.

Downtown

Closest to the museums, the visitor centre and evening restaurants; fewer rooms.

West Front Street / Rose Complex

Walk to the rose garden and the Tyler Museum of Art; quiet at night.

Watch out

Safety

Standard US precautions apply. Summer heat and long drives after dark on two-lane roads are the practical risks; local crime conditions: check.
  • Smith County is partly dry: liquor rules vary by location and licence type, so check local restrictions before you buy.
  • Summer afternoons regularly pass 35 °C; do the rose garden and state park early.
  • The Rose Festival in October fills hotels — book weeks ahead.
  • Some small museums keep limited hours: check before driving out.
