Give Nizhny Novgorod two nights: one full day for the Kremlin and Pokrovskaya, one for the Strelka and the fair side. Skip it if you only have a Moscow weekend.
Nizhny Novgorod is Russia's fifth-largest city, split by the Oka into a hilly Upper city with the Kremlin and a flat Lower city with the station and the old fair grounds. It was closed to foreigners in Soviet times and still gets few Western visitors. Two nights covers the walkable centre; the Sapsan from Moscow takes about 3.5 hours.

Getting around
The Upper city centre is compact and walkable, but the hills and the stairways between the banks are steep. Metro has 2 lines and 14 stations and is mostly useful for the station, Avtozavod and Sormovo, not for sightseeing. Trams, trolleybuses, buses and marshrutkas fill the gaps; pay the conductor or the driver within one stop, exact change helps. Bridges are not pleasant on foot — narrow pavement, fast traffic.

Safety
- Bridges over the Oka have narrow sidewalks and fast traffic: take the metro or a bus between the banks.
- Winter lasts from late November to late March with permanent snow and ice on the slopes.
- Marshrutkas only stop on request: wave to board, press the button to get off.
- Foreign bank cards mostly do not work in Russia: carry rubles in cash.
