YarmouthYarmouth, Nova Scotia

Give Yarmouth one night, two if you take the Bar Harbor ferry: lighthouse and waterfront in half a day, the rest is driving country.

Yarmouth sits at the southwestern tip of Nova Scotia, a town of about 7,000 where the lobster landings are the largest in Canada and the Cape Forchu lighthouse marks the harbour mouth. It is a ferry port to Maine and a base for the Acadian villages and lake country inland. The town itself is small: half a day covers the museums and the waterfront, and the reason to stay longer is the coast and the driving.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the lighthouse, beaches and Acadian villages are outside town and rural roads have no useful bus. Yarmouth Transit Service runs local routes but not on Sundays or holidays. Taxis (R & L, Sea Crest, Tri County, Yarmouth Town Taxi) cover short hops in town.

Watch out

Safety

Yarmouth is a small, quiet town and street crime is low. The real risks are weather and roads: fog, wet coastal driving, and cold water on the beaches. Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars at trailheads.
  • Fog is common: Yarmouth averages around 191 fog days a year, so plan the lighthouse for a clear window.
  • The Bar Harbor ferry runs a seasonal schedule (roughly mid-May to mid-November) and needs a passport or equivalent; book the car slot ahead in summer.
  • Many restaurants and attractions cut hours or close outside Jun–Sep: check before you drive out.
  • Distances look short on the map but rural roads are slow; Halifax is about 3 h by Highway 103.
