Lincoln is a small cathedral city with a medieval core stacked on a chalk scarp: cathedral, castle and the cobbled Steep Hill sit at the top, the railway station and Brayford Pool marina in the valley below. Most of the sights fit in one day on foot; the steep lanes and the climb between the two levels are what shape the plan, not distance. It works as a one-night stop between London and York, or as a base for Lincolnshire's aviation museums and empty fenland roads.

Getting around

Walk. The old town is a compact traffic-restricted area and the only real obstacle is the gradient: Steep Hill and the lanes between the two levels are cobbled and genuinely steep, so allow 15–20 min from the station to the cathedral. Stagecoach buses cover the suburbs and the Walk & Ride circulates Silver St, the cathedral, Bailgate, The Lawn and Castle Square roughly every 20 min. Shared pedal and e-bikes have docks at Newport Arch and Union St but none at the castle or cathedral. Taxis rank at the railway station.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small city; the real risks are the gradient and cobbles on Steep Hill, uneven pavements in the old town, and the river and Brayford waterfront after a few drinks.
  • Steep Hill is steep and cobbled: wear shoes with grip, use the handrails, and skip it in ice.
  • Don't drive into the centre without a booked car park; the multistorey north of the bus station has about 1,000 (≈ US$1,400) spaces and EV points.
  • Some sights close or cut hours in winter: the Medieval Bishops' Palace closes in winter and the castle shortens to 10:00–16:00 from October to March.
  • Cathedral and castle entry are separate tickets; check current prices and service times before you go.
  • The A15 south of Lincoln is a fast, straight single carriageway with blind junctions: take care if driving.
