  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Coral Gables is a planned 1920s city just south of downtown Miami: coral-rock gates, tree-lined boulevards, the University of Miami, the Venetian Pool and a walkable restaurant strip on Miracle Mile. It is a calm, upscale base with easy Metrorail and free trolley links, not a beach destination. One full day covers the centre; two lets you add Fairchild and Matheson Hammock.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The free Coral Gables Trolley runs mainly along Ponce de Leon Blvd through Miracle Mile and links to the Douglas Road Metrorail station; Miami-Dade Transit buses cover the rest. Metrorail's University station serves the campus. A car helps for Fairchild, Matheson Hammock and the beaches; metered and garage parking is common on Miracle Mile.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Miami Beach and South Beach

go

Door to door: 25–40 min

Car or rideshare via I-95 and the MacArthur Causeway

Go early for parking; the beach is not walkable from Coral Gables.

Key Biscayne and Crandon Park Beach

go

Door to door: 20–30 min

Car via the Rickenbacker Causeway

Calmer water and a long beach; toll on the causeway.

Downtown Miami

go

Door to door: 25–35 min

Metrorail from University station, or car

Use Metrorail to skip downtown parking.

Hialeah

caution

Door to door: 40–50 min

Metrorail Green Line north from University station

Mostly a local, everyday district; go only for a specific stop.

Florida City (Everglades and the Keys gateway)

overnight

Door to door: 45–60 min

Car south on US-1

A base for Everglades and Key Largo trips, not a quick return.

North Miami Beach

skip

Door to door: 35–50 min

Car north via I-95

Similar beaches are closer; only worth it for a specific address.

Sunny Isles Beach

caution

Door to door: 40–55 min

Car north via I-95 and the Sunny Isles Causeway

Long drive for a beach day; better as part of a north Miami plan.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown Coral Gables (Miracle Mile / Ponce de Leon Blvd)

Walk to restaurants, shops and the trolley; best for a short stay without a car.

Biltmore / Granada Blvd area

Quiet residential streets around the Biltmore Hotel and golf course; 15–20 min walk to Miracle Mile.

University of Miami / South Dixie Hwy

Cheaper beds and campus access; Metrorail University station, but fewer restaurants on foot.

Watch out

Safety

Coral Gables is one of the safer parts of Miami-Dade; the real risks are summer heat, hurricane season, and traffic or parking on Miracle Mile. Use normal city care after dark and keep valuables out of sight in cars.
  • Summer heat and humidity: plan indoor stops midday and carry water.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov, peaking late Aug–Oct: watch forecasts and know your airline's change policy.
  • Parking on Miracle Mile is metered and enforced; read the sign before you leave the car.
  • The Venetian Pool fills on hot weekends and can close for maintenance or private events: check before you go.
  • Distances look short on the map but Biscayne Bay beaches are a 20–30 min drive, not a walk.
