Marina del Rey
Use Marina del Rey as a 1–2 night LA base if you want a calm harbor, LAX in 15 min and Venice walkable; skip it if you want nightlife or walkable sightseeing.
Marina del Rey is a small harbor community on LA's Westside, about 6 km north of LAX and next to Venice. It is the largest man-made small-craft harbor in the US, with 5,300 berths, hotels on the water and a flat bike path. It works as a quiet base for the beaches and the airport, not as a sightseeing city. One or two nights is enough; most people come for the water, the bike path and a boat trip.

Getting around
The marina is about 3 km across, so walking end to end is slow. Bike is the best option: the Marvin Braude coastal path runs 35 km from Pacific Palisades to Torrance. In summer, the Marina WaterBus ($1 a boarding) and the free weekend Marina Beach Shuttle link the main stops. Metro and Big Blue Bus routes run along Lincoln Blvd and Via Marina. A car helps for LA generally; parking is easier and cheaper here than in Santa Monica.
