IstraИ́стра

Half-day trip from Moscow: see the New Jerusalem Monastery, walk the grounds, then return. One night only if you want a slow dinner in a quiet town.

Istra is a small town 40–60 minutes from Moscow by train, known almost entirely for the New Jerusalem Resurrection Monastery, a 17th-century fortress and museum complex. The town itself is quiet; most visitors come for the monastery and leave the same day. It works as a half-day escape from the capital or a stop between Moscow and Volokolamsk.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Russia ↗Check your own government travel advice for Russia before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Russia ↗Direct flights from much of Europe and North America are suspended; no independent tourist route is documented here.
  • Russia ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Russia before you rely on it.

Getting around

Walk from either Istra or Noviy Ierusalim station to the monastery (about 2 km). Bus 4 runs between the stations and the monastery; other buses (26, 32, 33, 34, 40, 46, 48) also serve the route but have confusing variations. Walking is simpler.

Watch out

Safety

Istra is safe for tourists. Usual precautions: watch your belongings at the train station, and avoid walking alone late at night in the town centre.
  • Trains from Moscow: express trains are faster but run only a few times a day; check the schedule at the station.
  • Buses from Tushinskaya metro station can be stuck in traffic between MKAD and Krasnogorsk.
  • The monastery is a working male monastery; dress modestly and respect prayer times.
  • Some outdoor exhibits (wooden architecture) may close in bad weather or off-season.
