Getting around

Walk. The centre is small and mostly flat, with the station, bus station and Abbey within 10 minutes of each other. Local buses and the four park-and-ride routes (Newbridge, Lansdown, Claverton Down, Odd Down) cover the edges; a day pass on one operator's Bath buses costs around £3.70. Taxis rank outside the station and near the Abbey. Driving in the centre is one-way, congested and short on parking: leave the car at a park-and-ride.

Safety

Bath is a low-crime, well-lit city centre; the real risks are uneven pavements, hills, pickpockets in the Abbey and Roman Baths queues, and weekend-night crowds around Kingsmead Square.
  • Bath is hilly at the edges: Sion Hill, Lansdown and Widcombe climb steeply from the centre.
  • Saturday parking fills early; central multi-storeys can be full by mid-morning.
  • Roman Baths tickets are timed and cheaper on weekdays; book online to avoid the entrance queue.
  • The American Museum and Gardens closes from January to mid-March.
  • Pavements double as shopping streets: look before stepping off the kerb.
