Concord is a small town (about 18,000 people) 30–45 minutes by commuter rail from Boston, and it is where the American Revolution's first shots were fired in April 1775. It is also the home of Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne and Louisa May Alcott. Most sights sit within a walkable centre, but Walden Pond and the Lincoln museums need a car, bike or a second day.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. For Walden Pond, the North Bridge and Lincoln, use a car, a bike (the Reformatory Branch Trail links Bedford's Minuteman Bikeway to Concord centre) or the Fitchburg Line, which stops at Lincoln, Concord and West Concord. Parking at Concord station is town-permit only; West Concord charges about $5.

Safety

Very safe for a US town of its size. The real risks are icy winter paths, summer heat at Walden Pond, and deer ticks on the conservation trails — use repellent and check yourself after walks.
  • Walden Pond parking is $8 for Massachusetts residents and $30 for non-residents, and the lot closes when full — arrive before 10:00 in summer.
  • Concord station parking is resident-permit only; use West Concord or arrive by train.
  • Many house museums are closed Mondays or run guided tours only — check each site's hours before you go.
  • Patriots' Day (third Monday in April) brings large crowds and road closures to the bridge and centre.
