Johnstown is a small Rust Belt city in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, about 66 km west-southwest of Altoona and 110 km east of Pittsburgh. Its draw is industrial and disaster history: the 1889 flood that killed more than 2,200 people, the South Fork Dam site, and the steepest vehicular funicular in the world. Two flood museums, a working incline and a walkable downtown fill a day; the surrounding state forests and the Flight 93 memorial fill a second.

Getting around

CamTran runs the local bus network (urban and rural fixed routes) and stops at the Amtrak station; the main transit centre is about 800 m southeast of it. Downtown sights are walkable, but the flood memorial at South Fork and the state parks need a car. Amtrak's daily Pennsylvanian links Johnstown with Pittsburgh, Altoona, Harrisburg, Philadelphia and New York.

Safety

Downtown is quiet after dark and the main risk is petty theft and empty streets, not violent crime; drive carefully on rural roads and check flood and winter-weather alerts.
  • The area has flooded repeatedly (1889, 1936, 1977); dams and diversion works are in place, but check weather alerts in heavy rain.
  • The flood memorial is in South Fork, about 16 km east of downtown — not walkable from the city.
  • Thunder in the Valley, the fourth weekend in June, fills hotels across the region; book early or avoid.
  • Rural roads in the Alleghenies ice up from December to March.
