Alnwick

Give Alnwick one full day and one night: castle and garden in the morning, Barter Books and the town walls after lunch. Skip it as a base without a car.

Alnwick is a small Northumberland market town of about 8,400 people, 34 miles north of Newcastle on the A1, built around a castle that has doubled as a film set for decades. The castle and the separate Alnwick Garden fill a day; the town itself is walkable in an hour. Most visitors come for one night on the way to Berwick, Lindisfarne or Edinburgh, and the nearest railway station is 3 miles away at Alnmouth.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

Everything in town is walkable: castle to bus station is about 10 min. Buses X15, X18 and X20 run from Newcastle and link Alnmouth station to Alnwick in about 13 min. For Craster, Howick, Cragside and the coast villages you need a car, a bike or a taxi; the land is flat and good for cycling.

Alnmouth

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Bus X18 or X20 from Alnwick, about 13 min to the station, then walk to the village

Harbour, beach and the nearest rail station; half a day is enough.

Door to door: About 1 h to Beal

Car or taxi to Beal, then the tidal causeway; some X15 buses stop at Beal

Cross only inside the safe tide window; check the causeway times the day before.

Door to door: About 1 h

Bus X15 north, or train from Alnmouth

Walls, bridges and the England–Scotland border; a full day with the coast.

Cragside, Rothbury

go

Door to door: About 25 min

Car or taxi, 10 miles southeast

Victorian house and gardens; timed entry in busy weeks, so book ahead.

Dunstanburgh Castle and Craster

go

Door to door: About 30 min to Craster

Car or taxi to Craster, then a 1.5-mile walk

Cliff ruin; the walk from the village is the point. No bus from Alnwick.

Morpeth

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Bus X15 or X18 south

Pleasant market town but similar to Alnwick; only worth it if you are heading south anyway.

Town centre (Bondgate and Market Place)

Walk to the castle gate in 5–10 min; pubs, cafés and the bus stops on the doorstep.

Near the castle and Bailiffgate

Quietest rooms and closest to the castle and Bailiffgate Museum; uphill from the bus station.

South Road and the A1 edge

Chain hotels with parking, about 15 min on foot from the centre; best if you are driving through.

Watch out

Safety

Alnwick is a low-crime small town and safe to walk at night; the real risks are dark unlit lanes after pub closing, fast A1 traffic if you cycle, and getting cut off by the tide at Lindisfarne.
  • The castle and garden are ticketed separately and both close out of season: check dates before you book travel.
  • Alnwick has no railway station; Alnmouth is 3 miles away and the bus link stops in the evening.
  • Castle opening days change for events and filming: check the official site the week you go.
  • Coastal roads and the A1 can be slow in summer and bank-holiday traffic.
