Wantage is a small Oxfordshire market town 16 miles southwest of Oxford, on the edge of the Berkshire Downs. Its pull is the Vale and Downland Museum, the King Alfred connection and the Uffington White Horse and hill fort 5 miles west. The town itself is a couple of hours on foot; the downs need a car or a long walk. Most travellers see it as a half-day from Oxford or Didcot, or one night in a pub with rooms.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Buses (Stagecoach 31/34 to Oxford; Thames Travel 32/36 to Didcot) leave from the Market Place area. Whitehorse Hill and Uffington are about 5 miles west with no useful bus: drive, cycle or walk the Ridgeway.

Safety

Wantage is a small market town and feels calm day to day; local crime figures are check. The practical risks are country lanes with no pavement, dark unlit footpaths on the downs and winter ice. Standard UK precautions apply.
  • The nearest railway station is Didcot Parkway, about 8 miles east: you need a bus, taxi or car from there.
  • Whitehorse Hill has two car parks and no station; the upper one is closer for easier access, the lower one has the signs and picnic tables.
  • Country lanes around the downs have no pavement and fast traffic: walk facing oncoming traffic and use a light after dark.
  • Many pubs and cafés close between lunch and evening service: check times before you set out.
