Caherciveen is a small Iveragh Peninsula town of about 1,300 people on the Ring of Kerry, with two restored stone ringforts, a Daniel O'Connell church and the Old Barracks heritage centre. Most travellers pass through in a car; buses from Killarney take 1 h 30 min. It works as a quiet one-night stop between Killarney and Portmagee, and as a base for Skellig Michael boats.

Getting around

The village is walkable in 10 minutes. Ballycarbery Castle, Cahergall and Leacanabuaile ringforts are a 30–40 min walk across Castlequin Bridge; the castle itself is closed to access, view it from the car park. For Valentia Island, Portmagee, Kells Bay or the beaches you need a car, a bike or a taxi. Casey Cycles on New Street hires bikes.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a small Irish town: the real risks are narrow N70 bends with tour buses, wet Atlantic weather and unlit roads at night. Walk facing traffic on the coast road and carry a rain shell.
  • Ballycarbery Castle is fenced off: the landowner closed public access, so you view it from 200 m away.
  • The Valentia Island ferry from Renard Point runs Apr–Oct only, roughly 7:30–20:00, no booking; outside that season use the bridge at Portmagee.
  • Skellig Michael boats fill weeks ahead in summer and sail only in calm weather; landings are weather-dependent and can be cancelled.
  • Mobile signal has dead zones on the approach roads even though the village has 5G.
  • Ring of Kerry tour buses run anti-clockwise; driving clockwise from Caherciveen avoids the worst convoy.
