Imlil is a small Amazigh village at about 1,800 m in the Aït Mizane valley, 60 km south of Marrakech and the roadhead for Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa. It is a walking base, not a sightseeing town: you come for terraced fields, walnut trees and village-to-village paths, and you sleep in a guesthouse or a mountain refuge. Two nights covers a valley walk and a short high route; a Toubkal ascent needs two days and a licensed guide.

Getting around

On foot. The village is small and the paths are rocky, so bring shoes with grip. Shared minibuses and grand taxis run the Asni–Imlil road during the day; mules carry luggage on trekking routes.

Watch out

Safety

Imlil is a small, walkable village and the main risks are altitude, weather and unlicensed guides, not crime. Walk with a licensed guide on high routes, carry water and a layer, and agree the price before you get in a taxi.
  • Since 2018, ascents of Mount Toubkal require a licensed mountain guide; arrange one in Imlil before you set out.
  • The Asni–Imlil road can flood; check conditions after heavy rain.
  • In Asni, touts may claim to lead you to a 'bus' or truck; the shared minibus leaves from the taxi area and the fare is a few dirham, not hundreds.
  • Above the village there are no shops or water points; carry what you need for the day.
  • Winter snow and ice are common at higher elevations; check the forecast and trail conditions before starting.
