Kuusamo is a small town in the Koillismaa highlands of northern Finland, 20 km south of the Ruka ski resort and 40 km from Oulanka National Park. It is a winter destination first: snow covers the ground up to 200 days a year, and Ruka is one of Finland's busiest ski resorts. Summer brings the Karhunkierros hiking trail and midnight sun. Public transport is thin, so most visitors drive or book transfers.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights are 20–45 km apart and local buses run only a few times a weekday in the school year, not at weekends or in summer. Coaches link Kuusamo centre with Ruka, Oulu, Rovaniemi, Kajaani and Kemijärvi. A dial-a-ride service covers Kuusamo–Ruka and can be booked in the Matkahuolto app. Taxis work but are expensive over these distances.

Watch out

Safety

Kuusamo is a low-crime, small-town area; the real risks are winter: cold, ice, snowmobile and ski injuries, and long dark drives. Tell someone your route if you hike or snowmobile off marked trails.
  • Winter driving: snow, ice and lower speed limits; winter tyres are required Dec–Feb.
  • The Kuusamo–Suoperä border crossing to Russia is closed (check current status).
  • The Sukerijärvi Strict Nature Reserve is closed to the public; permits are for science only.
  • In winter daylight lasts about three hours at the solstice; plan activities around it.
  • Auroras are possible all winter but less frequent here than further north.
