Guanajuato is a colonial silver-mining city at about 2,000 m in the Bajío, 390 km northwest of Mexico City, and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987. Streets climb steeply, and a network of tunnels carries traffic under the centre. Two nights covers the core; three adds a mine, a museum or a day trip.

Getting around

Walk: the centre is compact but sloped, so plan short legs. Urbanos run 07:00–22:00 at a flat fare (MXN 7) paid to the driver; no route map, destinations painted on the windshield. Tunnels are one-way and buses, taxis and Ubers stop underground at signed stairways. Taxis have no meters: agree the fare first, about MXN 50 in the centre. Uber has few cars; Didi and Cabify were not available.

Watch out

Safety

Guanajuato is generally calm for visitors; the real risks are steep, slick lanes, tunnel traffic, altitude on day one and unpriced taxis. Keep to lit streets at night and confirm taxi fares first.
  • Altitude about 2,000 (≈ US$110) m: take the first day slowly if you flew in from sea level.
  • Tunnels are one-way; a wrong turn in a car means a long loop.
  • Taxis have no meters and no posted prices: confirm the fare before you get in.
  • June–September is the rainy season; afternoon downpours and slick cobbles.
  • Late October brings the Cervantino festival: rooms sell out and prices jump.
