Greenwood is Canada's smallest incorporated city, population about 665, on Highway 3 in the West Kootenays. It was a copper smelting town from 1897 and the brick storefronts on Copper Street survive from that boom. There is no rail or commercial air service: you arrive by car or by a reserved bus. Two to three hours covers the town; a night makes sense if you are riding or walking the Kettle Valley Rail Trail from Midway.

Getting around

Everything in Greenwood is walkable: Copper Street and the museum are within a few minutes of each other. A car is needed for Boundary Creek Provincial Park, Jewel Lake and Phoenix Mountain. BC Transit's Boundary system runs reserved trips (Grand Forks on Fridays; Rock Creek–Grand Forks Health Connections on Tuesdays) — book by the day before.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are the highway through town, winter conditions on the mountain passes, and long gaps between services: fuel up in Grand Forks or Rock Creek.
  • No train and no scheduled air service: plan around the highway or a reserved bus.
  • BC Transit Boundary trips need a reservation by the day before and run on set days only.
  • The museum is by appointment only from November to April.
  • Highway 3 through town carries trucks; take care crossing Copper Street.
  • Winter driving on the mountain passes can mean snow tires or chains; check DriveBC before you set out.
