San Ignacio, Baja CaliforniaSan Ignacio

Stop for 1–2 nights on the Baja highway: see the mission, then a full day for whale-watching at San Ignacio Lagoon (seasonal, Jan–Apr).

San Ignacio is a small desert oasis of 500–700 people on Highway 1, 77 km west of Santa Rosalía. Its 18th-century Jesuit mission and the nearby San Ignacio Lagoon (the main winter sanctuary for Pacific gray whales) are the draws. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop on the Baja Peninsula road trip or a two-night base for whale-watching.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.

  • Whale-watching season is strictly January to April; no whales, no reason to come.
  • Highway 1 has no streetlights between towns; fill up at Pemex in Santa Rosalía or Guerrero Negro.
  • ATMs are scarce; bring enough pesos from Santa Rosalía or Guerrero Negro.
  • Summer heat can exceed 40°C (104°F); carry water.
