Give Dikili one full day plus a beach afternoon: base here only if you want a quiet Aegean resort, otherwise sleep in Bergama or Ayvalık.
Dikili is a small Aegean resort 120 km north of İzmir, busy with Turkish holidaymakers in July and August and near-empty in winter. The town itself is a harbour, a long sandy beach and a strip of cafés; the reasons to stop are the beach, the hot springs and the ruins at Atarneus and Kane, which are unexcavated and need imagination. Most travellers pass through on the way to Bergama or Ayvalık.

Getting around
Bus 837 links the inter-city terminal, the town centre and the port, then runs south through Demirtaş, Deliktaş and Çandarlı and loops round the gulf to Aliağa, where you change to the İZBAN metro for İzmir. Bus 835 connects to Bergama. For Bademli and the Denizköy coast road there is no useful bus: take a dolmuş if one is running, otherwise a taxi. The centre, port and beach are walkable.

Watch out
Safety
- July and August are hot and packed with domestic holidaymakers; book beds ahead and expect beach clubs to be full.
- Outside summer many pansiyons, beach clubs and the Perla Hotel stay shut; confirm your bed is open before you travel.
- Atarneus and Kane are unexcavated rubble on private or rough ground: no facilities, no shade, no signage worth the name.
- Kara Göl is a mineral crater lake: do not drink the water or swim in it.
- Ferries to Lesvos no longer sail from Dikili; go via Ayvalık instead.
