Perm is a million-person industrial city on the Kama river, at the western edge of the Urals, and a stop on the Trans-Siberian line. It was a closed city until 1990, so its draw is Soviet-era weight rather than a polished old town: the Motovilikha gun museum, the art gallery, the opera house and the Perm-36 camp museum 100 km northeast. Most travellers pass through; those who stay need one or two nights and a tolerance for long bus rides across a city that stretches 25 km along the river.

Getting around

Trams and buses are the only practical way across a city that runs 25 km along the Kama; tickets are bought from the driver or conductor and a transfer means a second ticket (fare about ₽20). Services run roughly 05:30–00:30. Allow 45–60 minutes for cross-city trips and plan around the river, not through it.

The next Trans-Siberian stop east, 50 km away; the ice cave is the reason to break the journey.

Watch out

Safety

Perm is an ordinary Russian industrial city: the real risks are traffic, pickpockets on packed buses and the markets, and unlit parks at night. Cold from November to March is a planning problem, not a crime one.
  • Reckless driving is the main risk; cross only at marked crossings.
  • Pickpocketing on crowded public transport and in the Central and Chinese markets.
  • Avoid Balatovo Park and other city parks after dark.
  • November to March is genuinely cold; indoor heating is strong, so dress in layers.
  • Perm-36 is 100 km out with limited public transport: arrange the trip before you commit.
