Poros is two islands joined by a canal bridge: Sfairia holds the town, Kalavria holds the pine coast, beaches and the Sanctuary of Poseidon. It is 59 km from Piraeus, 200 m from the Peloponnese mainland at Galatas, and small enough to cover on foot, by hourly bus or by €6 taxi. Most travellers use it as a 2-night Saronic stop rather than a week-long base.

Getting around

The town is walkable. Two bus lines start from the harbour square: Neorion Line (west coast beaches) and Monastery Line (Askeli, Panagitsa, Monastery Beach). Buses run roughly hourly and stop early in the evening. Small boats link the town with Galatas every 10 minutes (about €1) and on demand to Askeli. Grey taxis are cheap; town to the monastery is about €6 plus tip. Scooter and bike rentals sit on the beach road; cars are rented across the water in Galatas. Rental bikes cannot leave the island.

Watch out

Safety

Poros is a low-crime island and safe for families; the real risks are scooter riding on narrow roads, summer heat, and swimming where boats cross the Galatas channel.
  • The seafront road is narrow and one-way; do not drive into town if you can avoid it.
  • Buses thin out after dark; plan the last return from a beach.
  • Ferry and hydrofoil seats sell out on summer weekends and around Greek holidays: book ahead.
  • Check ferry times the day before you travel; Saronic schedules shift by season.
