OgunquitOgunquit, Maine

Give Ogunquit 2 nights: one full beach day plus the Marginal Way walk to Perkins Cove. Day-trippers should arrive before 10:00 — Route 1 and the beach lot fill by midday.

Ogunquit is a small southern Maine beach town, about 1 h 15 min by car from Boston, built around one 3-mile sandy beach, a 1.25-mile cliff path (the Marginal Way) and Perkins Cove. It is walkable once you park, seasonal (most businesses run May–October), and best for 2 nights: one beach day, one Marginal Way and Perkins Cove day. A car helps for arrival and day trips; inside town you can leave it parked.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Walk: the village, beach and Marginal Way connect on foot, and the town calls itself Maine's most walkable community. Trolley: the Ogunquit Trolley runs Route 1, Shore Road and the beach in season, with marked stops and a bell — pay per ride or by day pass (check). Car: useful for arrival and day trips, but parking is scarce and expensive in season; most inns and resorts include a free lot. Bike: Route 1 has shoulders; Shore Road is narrow.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a beach town: the real risks are summer traffic, rip currents and cold ocean water, plus uneven rocks on the Marginal Way. Lock your car and don't leave valuables on the sand.
  • Summer traffic backs up on Route 1 and Shore Road around the Main St/Shore Rd intersection; arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00.
  • Public beach parking runs about $25/day in season and fills early; Obed's Lot on Cottage Street needs prepayment.
  • Dogs are not allowed on the Marginal Way April–September.
  • Many restaurants, inns and shops close from November to April — check before booking a cold-season trip.
  • Rip currents and cold water: swim near lifeguards, and water is often 15–18 °C (59–64 °F) even in August.
