Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
  • Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
  • Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
  • Portugal ↗Portugal is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Portugal ↗Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains assign seats: book Lisbon–Porto ahead in summer and on holiday weekends.
  • Portugal ↗Many motorways, including the Algarve's A22, use electronic tolls only: ask the hire company for a transponder before you drive off.

Elvas is a hilltop garrison town on the Spanish border, 8 km from the Guadiana and about 200 km from Lisbon. Its UNESCO listing covers the star-fort walls, the Amoreira Aqueduct and the two outlying forts. The old town is small and walkable; the forts are not, so a car or a taxi changes what you can see in a day. Most travellers come for one night between Évora and Spain, or as a slow stop on the Alto Alentejo circuit.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Everything inside the walls is walkable in 15 minutes. The two forts sit outside: Santa Luzia is about 1 km from the centre, Graça about 3 km uphill. No city bus covers them usefully, so use a car, a taxi or a long walk with water. The train station is 3 km out.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Badajoz, Spain

caution

Door to door: About 1 h with the station transfer

One daily railcar from Elvas station, about 15 min

The only public transport link; times are tight and through-ticketing is not possible.

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Intercity bus from the Elvas bus terminal, just over 1 h

Adult fare around €11.90 (2026 estimate).

Estremoz

go

Door to door: About 1 h by car

Bus or car on the IP2/N4 corridor

Marble town and Saturday market; pairs well with Elvas.

Vila Viçosa

go

Door to door: About 45 min by car

Car, or bus with a change

Ducal palace and marble; easier with your own wheels.

Marvão

overnight

Door to door: About 1.5 h by car

Car via Portalegre and Castelo de Vide

Hill village on the Spanish border; too far for a relaxed return day.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Inside the walls (Praça da República and around)

Walk to the castle, cathedral and aqueduct; quiet at night; few rooms, book ahead.

Avenida de Badajoz (Assunção)

Hotel strip just outside the walls, 5–10 min on foot to the old town; easier parking.

Near the train station

Cheap and practical only if you arrive or leave by the one daily train; 3 km from the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Elvas is a small, calm town and street crime is rare. The real risks are summer heat, uneven wall walks with no railings, and the thin cross-border transport: never leave a Badajoz return to chance.
  • Cross-border public transport to Badajoz is one railcar a day: do not plan a Spain day-trip on it without checking times.
  • Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal; the return train leaves Badajoz at 16:24 Spanish time.
  • Fort opening days are limited (Graça closed Mondays, Santa Luzia opens late on Tuesdays): check before you walk up.
  • Summer afternoons are hot and the forts have almost no shade.
  • Many motorways in Portugal are electronic-toll only: sort payment before you drive.

  1. Best months: Mar–May, Sep–Nov · avoid Jul–Aug (inland heat, 35 °C+ afternoons) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for LIS: last bus and train departures field-checked, car-hire fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Praça da República, the castle, the aqueduct, the Avenida de Badajoz hotel strip.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (castle, Graça fort, Santa Luzia fort, cathedral) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Cross-border and hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
