Inis Oírr (Inisheer) is the smallest and most easterly of the Aran Islands, 10 km off the Clare coast and formed of the same bare limestone as the Burren. Most sights sit within 1 km of the ferry pier, so it works as a day trip from Doolin or Rossaveel, but one night buys you the empty lanes after the boats leave. Irish is the everyday language; tourism is the main industry.

Getting around

Walk: all facilities and most sights are within 1 km of the pier. Five lanes run southwest from the harbour, paved for a km or two then turning to boreen; there are few cross-links, so crossing between them means walking on bare limestone. Bikes, pony-and-trap and a tractor-drawn trailer tour start at the pier.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for tourists: the real risks are weather, wet limestone underfoot and the lack of mobile signal away from the landing area. Tell someone your walking plan and carry cash.
  • No mobile signal outside the landing area: finish urgent calls on the ferry.
  • The island's only ATM is at Siopa XL next to the hotel; bring cash.
  • Never bring a vehicle, even a motorbike: park at Rossaveel.
  • Flights are in 9-seat aircraft and are often cancelled in bad weather.
  • O'Brien's Castle is usually free to enter but the gate is sometimes locked.
