Adare is a small village 15 km southwest of Limerick, known for its thatched Main Street, two medieval religious houses and a castle you can only reach by shuttle from the Heritage Centre. The whole historic core is walkable in two hours, but the N21 runs straight through it, so traffic is constant. Most travellers use it as a comfortable first or last night near Shannon airport, or as a stop between Limerick and Kerry.

Getting around

On foot: Main Street, both churches and the Heritage Centre sit within 500 m of each other. Desmond Castle has no walk-up access — buy the ticket at the Heritage Centre and take the shuttle. Free CCTV-monitored car park behind the Heritage Centre with an EV charger; street parking is scarce. Taxis: Adare Cab and Adare Taxi (check current numbers locally).

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime village; the real hazards are the N21 traffic through the centre and unguarded bags in car parks. Usual city precautions apply.
  • The N21 runs through the village: no bypass until 2027, so expect queues and cross with care.
  • Desmond Castle is shuttle-and-ticket only, June–Sept, and closed the rest of the year.
  • The Franciscan Abbey ruin sits on the golf course: ask at the clubhouse before walking out.
  • Adare Manor's course is guests-only and expensive; the separate Adare Manor Golf Club is the one visitors can book.
  • Ryder Cup at Adare Manor, 17–19 Sep 2027: beds and roads will be under pressure for days around it.
