MilfordMilford, Utah

Stop for one night if you are crossing the Great Basin on UT-21 or I-15; skip it as a destination — there is no sight here worth a special trip.

Milford is a railroad and farming town of about 1,400 people on the east side of the Great Basin, roughly midway between I-15 and Great Basin National Park. It has one motel with a diner, one taco shop, a small park and a lot of open country. Travellers use it as a bed between long drives, not as a base.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

You need a car. The town is small enough to walk in 15 minutes, but everything outside it — the pass to Beaver, the road west to Baker — is a drive of 40 minutes or more with no services between.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 45 min

Car east on UT-21, then I-15

Historic main street, a working dairy town and the last full set of services before the desert.

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

Car west on UT-21 into Nevada, then NV-487 and NV-488

Too far for a comfortable return day. Sleep in Baker or inside the park and see the cave and the bristlecones properly.

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Car east on UT-21 and north on I-15

Shakespeare festival, more beds and food, and the gateway to Zion and Bryce Canyon.

Door to door: About 2 h 30 min

Car east on UT-21, then UT-20 and US-89

A full day each way; stay near the park rather than driving back to Milford.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet town with no street-crime problem worth planning around. The real risks are the drive: long empty stretches, no phone signal, winter ice on UT-21 and summer heat.
  • Fuel and food gaps: the next reliable services are in Beaver (about 40 min east) or Baker, Nevada (about 1 h 30 min west). Fill up before you leave.
  • UT-21 west over the mountain is remote, unlit and can ice up in winter; check conditions before committing.
  • Cell coverage drops quickly outside town — download offline maps.
  • Summer afternoons regularly pass 35 °C (95 °F); carry water in the car.

  2. Verify fuel hours in Milford and the last fuel before Great Basin National Park.
  3. Add winter closure and ice notes for UT-21 over the mountain.
  4. Add a Beaver and Cedar City page so the loop has somewhere to land.
