Whitby is a lakeside suburb in Durham Region, 48 km east of Toronto, with about 140,000 people. Its draw is small and local: a waterfront trail, two conservation areas, a heritage courthouse and a brewery. Most travellers pass through on the GO Lakeshore East train between Toronto and Oshawa, or stop on the way to somewhere else in Durham.

Safety

Whitby is a low-crime suburban town and is generally safe for visitors. The main risks are winter driving on the 401 and 407, and poorly lit waterfront paths after dark.
  • Highway 407 is tolled; the 401 is free but often slow at peak times.
  • Camp X / Intrepid Park sits on the Whitby–Markham boundary; check the access point before you drive there.
  • Some motels on Dundas St W are basic; read recent reviews before booking.
