Pals is a hilltop medieval village of about 2,700 people, 4 km inland from its own 2.8 km beach on the Costa Brava. The old centre — walls, towers, cobbled lanes — is small and walkable in an afternoon, and the beach is a separate trip by car or a long walk. Most visitors use it as a quiet base for the Baix Empordà rather than a destination in itself.

Getting around

The old town is on foot only. The beach is 4 km downhill — walkable but hot in summer; a car, bike or taxi is easier. Buses (Sarfa) link Pals with Girona, Palafrugell and Torroella de Montgrí; the nearest railway station is Flaçà, about 25 km away.

Watch out

Safety

Pals is a low-crime village; the real risks are summer heat on the exposed beach, narrow lanes with cars, and strong currents or no lifeguard cover outside the flagged season.
  • Free parking near the old town fills by mid-morning in high season; use the paid car parks on Carrer dels Horts or Avinguda de Paul Companyó.
  • The beach is not next to the village: allow 10–15 minutes by car and plan parking.
  • Many beach bars, campsites and resort hotels close from late October to Easter.
  • Summer afternoons on the exposed beach are hot; there is little shade on the sand.
