LeamingtonLeamington, Ontario

Give Leamington 2 nights in May or September for Point Pelee: it is a small town, and the park plus Hillman Marsh is the whole reason to come.

Leamington is Canada's southernmost town, on the 42nd parallel, and the gateway to Point Pelee National Park and Hillman Marsh. Birders come for spring and autumn migration; everyone else comes for the marsh boardwalk, the beach and Lake Erie perch. Two nights covers the park properly; one night is a rushed look.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the park gate is about 10 km from the town centre and Hillman Marsh is 6 km east. LTGO on-demand transit runs point-to-point, booked at least 45 minutes ahead (adult fare about $3). Enterprise on Talbot St W rents cars. Cycling to the park is possible but the road is fast and open.

go

Door to door: 15 min

Drive west on Highway 3, about 13 km (8.1 mi)

Wineries, a walkable main street and the ferry dock from late August.

Windsorcaution

Door to door: 45–55 min

Drive northwest on Highway 3, about 50 km (31 mi)

A half-day for the riverfront and Caesars; not worth it just for shopping.

Erie Street corridor (town centre)

Hotels, restaurants and the marina within a short walk; best for a car-free evening.

Point Pelee Drive / park edge

Closest to the park gate and the marsh; book early for May and September weekends.

Wheatley and Campers Cove

East of town, cheaper camping and cabins; needs a car for everything.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are driving Highway 3 at dusk with deer and farm traffic, marsh mosquitoes and ticks, and swimming where there is no lifeguard.
  • Point Pelee entry is charged per vehicle; buy online or at the gate and keep the receipt for the day.
  • The park shuttle to the Tip runs in season only: check dates before you plan the walk.
  • Pelee Island ferries switch from Leamington to Kingsville in late August, and the Sandusky, Ohio run stops from mid-September: check the sailing before booking.
  • Summer weekends fill every hotel in town; book weeks ahead for May and September.
  • Mosquitoes and ticks are real around the marsh: repellent and long sleeves.
