San Pedro is the university city east of downtown San José, at about 1,400 m in the Central Valley. It is walkable, has the country's largest public university, a strong café and restaurant strip, and two train stops on the San José–Cartago line. Most travellers use it as a quieter, cheaper bed for San José and Barrio Escalante rather than as a destination in itself.

Getting around

The core is walkable. Buses from downtown San José run east frequently and are labelled for the university or San Pedro; fares are a few hundred colones. The San José–Cartago train stops at UCR and U Latina/Lourdes. Uber works across the metro area and is usually cheaper than taxis. Waze is the local standard for driving. Street names are rarely used: give a park, church or mall as the landmark.

Safety

One of the safer parts of the metro area; violent crime is low. Take normal precautions, keep valuables out of sight, and avoid the university bar strip late at night.
  • The university bar district is the one area to avoid late at night; trouble there is a known local issue.
