Safety

Low crime, but the real risks are rural driving at night, deer on US-12 and no sidewalks. Keep to the shoulder, use lights and don't walk the highway after dark.
  • No sidewalks and no street lighting on rural roads: wear something visible after dark.
  • US-12 is a fast divided highway; cross only at marked points.
  • Cell signal and Wi-Fi are patchy outside the main buildings.
  • Most kitchens close by 21:00 and some places shut entirely in January–March: call before driving out.
