Holbox is a small sand island off Quintana Roo's north coast, about 2,000 residents, no paved roads, golf carts and bicycles for transport. It sits inside the Yum Balam reserve and is known for whale sharks (late May–September), flamingos, bioluminescence on dark nights and a shallow, calm shore. It is a slow beach stop, not a sightseeing city: two to three nights covers it. Getting there costs a bus or drive to Chiquilá plus a 25–30 minute ferry, so a day trip from Cancún is long and thin.

Getting around

No paved roads: walk, rent a bicycle or a golf cart, or take the four-wheeler taxis that gather near the beach and plaza in peak hours (10:00–18:00). Taxis are scarce early morning and late at night. Golf carts are rented by the day and are the loudest thing on the island; book ahead in high season.

Watch out

Safety

Holbox is a low-crime island and the main risks are practical: heat, mosquitoes, unreliable ATMs, strong sun and boat trips in rough weather. Use reef-safe sunscreen, keep cash, and check sea conditions before any whale shark or cenote tour.
  • Cards are widely taken but many shops add a 3–5% fee: carry cash.
  • ATMs are few and unreliable — bring enough pesos for your whole stay.
  • Whale shark trips are regulated: operators offering well under the standard shared-tour rate may not follow the rules (two entries per boat, no touching).
  • Bioluminescence only shows on dark, new-moon nights; a full moon kills it.
  • Sand streets flood after heavy rain and mosquito numbers rise; bring repellent.
  • Hurricane season runs roughly Jun–Nov, peaking Sep–Oct: check forecasts before booking a short trip.
