Deming

Stop for one night on I-10, or skip unless it is late August (duck race) or you want Rockhound and City of Rocks state parks.

Deming is a small high-desert town on Interstate 10 in southwest New Mexico, about 60 mi west of Las Cruces and 109 mi from El Paso. It is a road-trip and Amtrak stop, not a destination: one night, two state parks nearby, a free local museum and a late-August duck race. No commercial airport; you arrive by car, bus or train.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

You need a car. I-10 runs east–west through town (exits 81–85); Pine St is the old main street, Gold Ave leads north to US 180 and NM 26. Downtown is a short walk, but the state parks and wineries are 5–30 mi out with no useful public transport.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime for a small US town; the real risks are desert heat, long empty drives and wildlife on the road at dusk. Standard US precautions apply.
  • Summer afternoons regularly pass 35 °C (95 °F); carry water and do the parks early.
  • Amtrak's platform is unmanned: buy tickets before boarding.
  • Greyhound's stop is a pick-up/drop-off point at a McDonald's on W Pine St — book ahead online or by phone.
  • Cell coverage can be patchy on the back roads to the state parks.
