Slyudyanka is where the Trans-Siberian drops off the Olkhinsky Plateau to the southwest tip of Lake Baikal, 110 km from Irkutsk. Trains stop for minutes, not hours, so seeing the town means taking a later train. The draw is small and specific: a station built entirely of marble, two private mineral collections, wooden railway houses from the 1900s, and the lake a short walk away. Kultuk, a few kilometres north, has grown into it and shares the same shoreline.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk: Rudo district to the centre is about 20 minutes on foot. Local marshrutka 101 runs from the south of town through Slyudyanka to Kultuk roughly every 20 minutes. Slyudyanka-1 station sits on the lake side of the tracks; cross the long pedestrian bridge to reach the commercial side. Slyudyanka-2 is the stop for the beach and Shamanka rock.

Safety

A small, quiet town and generally safe for visitors; the practical risks are cold water, unmarked mountain trails and winter ice. Follow your own government's travel advice for Russia before booking anything.
  • Long-distance trains stop only a few minutes: to see the town you must continue on a later train.
  • No passenger boats serve Slyudyanka; the lake is for looking at, not for arrivals.
  • Baikal water stays cold even in midsummer — locals tan on the beach rather than swim.
  • The Circum-Baikal Railway train runs on limited days, not daily: check the current timetable before you build a plan on it.
  • Stopping a car on the Baikal switchbacks is illegal; use the café car park.
  • The Pereval marble quarry west of town is working and closed to visitors.
