Harlingen is a small historic port in Friesland, about 16,000 people, at the end of the line before the Wadden Sea. It is the mainland ferry pier for Terschelling and Vlieland, and its own old harbour, canals and 17th-century warehouses fill an easy half day on foot. Most travellers come for the ferry, a boat rental or a quiet night between Leeuwarden and the islands.

Getting around

The centre and the ferry pier are walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Two train stations: Harlingen Station (town) and Harlingen Haven (harbour). Buses 71 and 97 run to Leeuwarden, 75 to Franeker, 99 to Bolsward, Sneek and Heerenveen; line 132 reaches the Afsluitdijk. Bikes rent locally, about €10 a day.

A quiet, low-crime port town; the real risks are wind and water. Wear a life jacket on rented boats, keep off the harbour edges after dark and watch for bikes on the quays.
  • Ferries to Terschelling and Vlieland sell out on summer weekends and holidays: book ahead.
  • Wind and rain come in fast off the Wadden Sea; a waterproof layer beats an umbrella.
  • Small boats rent without a licence, but fuel is charged separately and the tank is weighed on return.
  • Many restaurants and museums keep short or seasonal hours outside summer: check before you build a day around one.
