Chefchaouen is a small Rif mountain town of about 31,000 people, 2.5–4 hours by road from Tangier, Tétouan or Fes. The blue-painted medina takes half a day; the rest of the value is in the mountains above it. Two nights is the sweet spot — one night feels rushed, three is only worth it if you hike.

Getting around

The medina is walk-only and small enough to cross in 15 minutes. Petit taxis cover the bus station, the outer hotels and Bab Souk for about MAD 10–15. Grand taxis from the stand by the bus station run to Tétouan, Tangier and Akchour. Cars park outside the walls, about MAD 10 per day.

Watch out

Safety

Chefchaouen is calm and safe by Moroccan city standards; the real issues are altitude and heat on the trails, unlit lanes at night, and drug touts. Solo women report less hassle here than in Marrakech or Fes, but expect stares and offers.
  • Hash is offered openly around the medina and on trails; possession and sale are illegal in Morocco and police do stop tourists.
  • Trails above town cross cannabis fields and are poorly marked — go with a local guide or stay on the marked path to the Spanish Mosque.
  • Guesthouses inside the medina are reached on foot only; arrange a meeting point at a gate before you arrive.
  • Summer afternoons in Jul–Aug are hot and the medina lanes are narrow and crowded; start sightseeing early.
