Chincoteague is a small island town on Virginia's Eastern Shore, joined to Assateague Island by a causeway. People come for the wild ponies, the unbuilt beach and the refuge trails, not for a city break. Two nights covers the refuge, the beach and one slow evening; the last Wednesday in July (Pony Swim) is the busiest day of the year.

Getting around
Drive or cycle. The island is flat and small, but the refuge and beach are 3–5 km from the motels on Maddox Blvd. Bikes get you into the refuge without a car queue and are the fastest way to the Wildlife Loop. The Pony Express trolley runs May to mid-October in the evening only and does not go to the beach; Star Transit runs weekday service to the town office, Oak Hall and Wattsville.

Safety
- Mosquitoes and biting flies are severe near the marsh from June to September: bring repellent and cover up at dusk.
- Assateague Island charges an entry fee per vehicle; there is no shop or drink machine past the gate, so carry water.
- Pony Swim week (last Wednesday in July) fills every bed and road: book months ahead or avoid it.
- Summer traffic on Maddox Blvd backs up at the refuge gate; go early or ride a bike.
- Do not approach or feed the ponies; they bite and the fine is real.
