Valkenburg is a small Limburg town that has been a domestic holiday destination for decades, with more hotels and bars per street than its 16,500 residents would suggest. The draw is compact: a hilltop castle ruin, a set of marl caves under the town, a spa and casino on the Cauberg, and the Geul valley for walking and cycling. Trains run to Maastricht and Heerlen through the day (check the current timetable), so it works as a base for the whole South Limburg region. Two nights covers the town; add nights if you want the caves, the countryside and Maastricht without rushing.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: station to Grotestraat about 5 min, castle ruin and Gemeentegrot about 10–15 min. The Cauberg climb to Thermae 2000 and the casino takes 15–20 min uphill. Trains run to Maastricht and Heerlen through the day (Arriva; check the current timetable for frequency). Buses 51 and 53 go to Maastricht, 49 to Gulpen and Geleen. Bikes can be rented within a 10-minute walk of the station. A car helps for the villages and the Geul valley, but parking in high season is expensive and fills early.

Watch out

Safety

Valkenburg is a safe small town; the real issues are crowds, drink and the Cauberg climb. Watch your bag in packed Christmas-market streets and don't leave valuables in a parked car.
  • Parking in the centre is costly and fills fast in summer and at Christmas: arrive before mid-morning or park outside and walk.
  • Caves are only visited on guided tours; English tours may need booking ahead.
  • The Panoramagrot opens only in July and August.
  • The Cauberg is a genuine climb for Dutch standards; allow time if you are walking to the spa or casino.
  • Weekend nights in the centre are loud; ask for a room away from Grotestraat if you sleep early.
