Skip Hartford as a base unless you are here for bluegrass or a horse show: one night, or a half-day stop between Owensboro and Bowling Green.
Hartford is the seat of Ohio County in Kentucky's Western Coal Fields, a small town of about 2,700 people on the Western Kentucky Parkway and I-165. It is a car stop, not a destination: the draws are the Ohio County Museum, the county park's horse arena and the bluegrass history of nearby Rosine, where Bill Monroe was born. Most travellers pass through on the way between Owensboro and Bowling Green, or sleep one night in Beaver Dam, 10 minutes south, where the motels are.

Getting around
You need a car. US 231 links Hartford and Beaver Dam as a four-lane road with shops and restaurants; US 62 runs east to Rosine and west toward the Green River. KY 69 goes northeast to Fordsville and the Ohio River at Hawesville, with an I-165 interchange. There is no useful public transport between the towns.

Bill Monroe's birthplace; the general store is on the National Register. The Jerusalem Ridge festival runs late September into early October — check dates and the farm's status before you go.
