Sunnyvale is a Silicon Valley suburb with a small, walkable old downtown on Murphy Street and two Caltrain stops. It is not a sightseeing city: the draw is a quiet, safe base between San Francisco and San Jose, with cheap and varied food along El Camino Real. Most travellers pass through on Caltrain or use it for one or two nights while working or visiting the valley.

Getting around

Caltrain runs through downtown Sunnyvale and Lawrence, linking San Francisco and San Jose. VTA bus 22 is the main El Camino Real line; bus 522 is the faster limited-stop version. VTA light rail also serves Sunnyvale but does not connect directly with Caltrain. Bikes are allowed on Caltrain, VTA buses and light rail at all hours, and many roads have bike lanes. A car helps for strip-mall food and offices.

Safety

One of the safer South Bay cities; the real risks are traffic on US 101 and El Camino Real, summer heat, and leaving bags visible in a parked car.
  • Rush hour on US 101 and El Camino Real is slow; allow extra time.
  • Downtown is small: most of the city is strip malls and offices, so pick your base by what you need to reach.
  • Summer afternoons are hot and dry; carry water if walking between stops.
