Falmouth is a harbour town on Cornwall's south coast with four beaches, two Tudor castles and a branch-line railway that runs 20 minutes from Truro. Two nights covers the town, one ferry crossing and a coast-path walk; three if you add the National Maritime Museum and Glendurgan Garden. It is a base, not a stop-off: the train from Truro is short but the town is hilly and the beaches sit 15–25 minutes on foot from the centre.

Getting around

The centre is walkable but hilly: Killigrew Street and Trelawney Road climb hard. Three town buses run — 363 to the suburbs, 366/366A TownLink loop every 20 min, 367 ShoreLink hourly to the beaches and Pendennis Point. Kernow passes are not valid on these. Trains: Falmouth Town for the centre and Gyllyngvase, Falmouth Docks for Pendennis Castle, Penmere for the north side. Ferries leave the Prince of Wales Pier for St Mawes and Flushing.

Watch out

Safety

Falmouth is a low-crime seaside town; the real risks are steep wet pavements, cold water and rip currents at unpatrolled Castle Beach, and a long walk home after the pubs close.
  • On-street parking is scarce and many guesthouses have none; summer beach car parks fill by mid-morning.
  • Low spring tides can cancel ferry crossings to St Mawes and Flushing; check at the pier office before you buy.
  • Cornwall buses are reliable but minor routes stop early; check the last bus back before an evening out.
  • Pendennis Castle has shorter winter hours and closed days; check English Heritage before travelling.
  • Castle Beach has no lifeguard; Gyllyngvase is patrolled in summer only.
