Leigh-on-Sea is a small Essex town on the Thames estuary, about 45–50 minutes by train from London Fenchurch Street. It splits into two hubs: Old Leigh by the water, with pubs and seafood, and the Broadway up the hill, with independent shops and bars. There are no hotels in town, so most people visit as a day trip and sleep in Southend or London.

Getting around

Old Leigh is best on foot; the cobbled High Street is not pedestrianised, so watch for slow cars. The Broadway is a busy high street with few parking restrictions. Buses 21, 21B and 26 run through town, and services run along London Road. Car parks sit at the station and off Belton Way; parking by the beach in Old Leigh only works on quiet days.

A low-crime, well-lit town; the real risks are the fast tide in the estuary, uneven cobbles in Old Leigh and busy roads on the Broadway. Standard UK precautions apply.
  • No hotels or B&Bs in Leigh itself: book Southend or London instead.
  • Parking near the Old Leigh beach fills up fast on sunny weekends.
  • The tide goes out for a long way here; check tide times before planning a swim.
