Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go
Overview
The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.
George Town is a small harbour capital of a few streets, so the town itself takes half a day. The trip is decided by weather, the cruise-ship calendar and how you get around: taxis are fixed-fare and expensive, buses run mainly along the west coast, and a rental car makes the island easy. Four areas cover a first visit; Stingray City and Rum Point are boat or drive days on top of them.
Fits
- Beach and water trips
- Divers and snorkellers
- Short easy breaks with a rental car
Does not fit
- Budget travellers (prices are high)
- Travellers who want to avoid hurricane season risk
- Travellers who dislike being car-dependent
- 2 days
- George Town waterfront in the morning, Camana Bay and Seven Mile Beach the rest of the time
- 3 days
- Four areas: waterfront, Camana Bay, Seven Mile Beach, and a boat trip to Stingray City if the sea allows
- 5 days
- Four areas + East End and Rum Point by car + one slow beach day
- Don't confuse
- George Town is the capital and cruise port; the hotels and beach are on Seven Mile Beach, about 10–15 minutes north by road.
Hover, tap or tab to an area to see what it is like. Pins are sleep areas; arrows at the edge point to the airport.
Off the map: Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) (15–30 min by the usual route).
Where’s what, as a list:
- George Town waterfront and Fort Street: A half-morning walk: the National Museum, the fort ruins and the harbour front, all flat and within ten minutes; go before the cruise crowds arrive.
- George Town centre: Panton Street and Elgin Avenue: Small shopping and lunch cluster east of the waterfront: banks, duty-free shops and cafés; a half-hour stop, not a destination.
- Camana Bay and the Observation Tower: The planned town centre north of George Town: climb the tower for the island view, then eat on the main street; flat and shaded, with a Wednesday farmers' market.
- Seven Mile Beach (south): The beach base: the sand is public, the water is calm, and cafes and dive shops line West Bay Road; a morning swim and a sunset are the plan.
- Sleep area George Town centre: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$.
- Sleep area Seven Mile Beach: suits Families, older travellers, wheelchair users, price band $$$.
- Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM), 15–30 min by the usual route.
