Lidingö is a residential island 15–20 min from central Stockholm, joined to the city by two bridges at Ropsten. It is a suburb with a coastline, not a sightseeing town: the draw is Millesgården, the Lidingöbanan light rail, walking and cycling paths, a few beaches, and a cluster of conference hotels on the Elfvik peninsula. Most travellers come for half a day and sleep in Stockholm.

Getting around

Lidingöbanan light rail (line 21) runs from T-Ropsten through southern Lidingö to Gåshaga brygga, and buses cover the rest; both use standard SL tickets, so a 24 h or 72 h SL pass covers the metro, tram and buses. Walking and cycling paths are separated from traffic and well signed. Parking is mostly free but needs a parking disc.

Safety

A calm, low-crime residential island. The real risks are ticks in long grass, unsafe ice in winter, bike theft, and the September race weekend when roads close and beds vanish.
  • Lidingöloppet in September closes roads and fills beds: check the 2026 date and avoid that weekend unless you are racing.
  • Ticks in long grass and woodland from spring to autumn; check yourself after walks.
  • Ice on lakes and the Baltic is never guaranteed safe: check local advice before walking or skating on it.
  • Bike theft is the main crime risk; lock properly, especially at Ropsten and the tram stops.
  • Occasional protests and police checkpoints near embassy buildings.
