Storlien is a village of about 250 people on the Swedish-Norwegian border, 2 km from Norway and 73 km from Trondheim airport. It sits at the highest railway station in Sweden, on a saddle in the Scandinavian mountains. Its draw is a small alpine hill good for children and beginners, cross-country trails, and Swedish prices against a Norwegian border trade. Most travellers pass through on the train between Trondheim and Östersund; a night or two is enough.

Getting around

The village is small and walkable; almost everything sits along Vintergatan. For anything further, call the local bus/taxi operator (Wänseths buss) or drive. The E14 runs through the village and is the main road across the border to Norway.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are winter: cold, wind, avalanche and road conditions, and thin ice on lakes. Tell someone your route before hiking or skiing off the marked trails.
  • Norway is outside the EU customs union: declare goods and expect possible customs checks at the border.
  • Trains to and from Trondheim run only about twice a day — check times before you commit to a connection at Hell.
  • Winter conditions on the E14 can close or slow the road; winter tyres are required in winter conditions.
  • Rensjösäterns jaktvilla (the 'Pink Castle') is privately owned and not open inside.
  • The Stora Helvetet rail embankment was rebuilt as a bridge in 2017–2018 after landslide risk; do not walk the old line.
